Before starting mold design, the material of the part is selected, the production method is determined, and the 3D geometry and toleranced technical drawing of the part to be manufactured are created. In order to carry out the conceptual mold design, information about the machine to be used for production (tonnage, stroke, mounting plate, etc.) is required. In addition to these, information such as total production quantity, monthly production quantity, cycle time, and investment budget determines how many cavities the mold will have. During the conceptual design stage, if the mold to be made is a plastic injection mold, decisions are made regarding whether there will be side actions/sliding cores, as well as the runner and ejector type and the principles of the cooling system. After agreeing with the customer on the basic mold principles and receiving the order, the detailed mold design phase begins. Mold design is carried out in 3D. The mold’s operating principle, movement sequence, and stages are analyzed. At this stage, if there is a predicted risk of defects during production, risks can be minimized by performing production simulations (such as determining runner locations through mold flow analysis for plastic injection molds). Once the detailed mold design is completed, materials are ordered and mold manufacturing begins. The process is completed with mold trials and the approval of both the part and the mold.
